What inspires you to work in STEM or operations?
Science and math education was very important to my family and I was attracted to the topics at school from the beginning. I got my first exposure to computers in fourth grade and my brother introduced me to programming. I was immediately fascinated by the idea that I could program computers to do what I wanted them to do.
I love the problem solving aspects of STEM. I believe STEM is core to society’s progress and working in STEM allows me to have an impact.
What excites you about your work at Berkeley Lab?
As a computer scientist, my research focuses on effective and efficient management of scientific computation and data on current and future computing platforms. Being able to have an impact on science and society’s challenges through the team science at Berkeley Lab is what excites and inspires me every day.
How can our country engage more women, girls, and members of other underrepresented groups in STEM or operations?
We need a multi-pronged approach to engaging women, girls, and members of other groups in STEM and operations. We need strong investments in STEM education starting in elementary school. It is equally important that we change the culture around STEM in society to be positive, inspiring, and welcoming to everyone.
Do you have tips you would recommend for someone looking to enter your field of work?
Work hard, learn from failures, keep an open mind, and don’t be afraid to try new things.
When you have free time, what are your hobbies?
Hiking, biking, baking, and cooking with my family. I also love reading and have picked up writing and sewing in the pandemic!
